No real experience on this - can you enter and exit VIX futures as easily as you do with options or with VXX? Have you or anyone else here had experience trading VIX futures?

Today the sept 21 contracts traded some 85000 times with a typical spread of 5 cts, plenty liquidity. Market data is just a few bucks per month with IB, CFE enhanced level 1 is $2.50 a month and level 2 $ 4.00. I would suggest paper trading a few rounds to get a feel for the leverage you're dealing with.
A big plus is that you can get in and out easily outside market hours.

Sold FL 65 oct puts this afternoon for $1.90 with FL at $ 65.75. FL gapped up on earnings and retraced to (what I hope) support.
Associated margin $1424, return on margin 13.1 % if it expires worthless. Will cover around $ 1.15 (40 % return). Should I get assigned, which typically happens less then 1 in 10 times I'll sell calls on the stock until it gets called.

MY VIX System triggered a short signal for VIX (long XIV) for tomorrow at the open. Current open positions are
Short Short-Sell 20 Market Stock ^VIX 13.4200 SHORT VIX 9
Long Hold 20 Stock ^VIX 08/01/2016 11.8900 13.4200 12.87% LONG VIX 1
Short Hold 20 Stock ^VIX 08/29/2016 14.0900 13.4200 4.76% SHORT VIX 7
Short Hold 20 Stock ^VIX 08/29/2016 14.0900 13.4200 4.76% SHORT VIX 2
This is the typical signal email I get each night from my Stratasearch VIX Signal system. The second VIX system I developed (comprised of 15 long and 15 short filters, jokingly called UBER VIX) has me closing out 1 long position tomorrow at the open but holding 1 other previous long and 8 open short positions (5 of which are at a loss right now).
My catch with this is that the system is developed against the index, but does not always trade well when applied to VXX or XIV. Hence my question regarding people's experiences with VIX futures.

Yea the vix and xiv are crap IMHO.. i've seen the VIX fut rip 2 handles and VIX is flat or red... also a ton of decay the way the options are structured. Its pretty bad really.

++++++++++++
Until I can get a decent handle on futures trading, I'll stick with VXX and XIV, but I would like to move to something that truly reflects (and reacts) like the index.

Yes I think it is very hard for an individual to set up a real profitable system to trade the futures. The alogos will kill you. By system trade I mean if A+B+C=D then take the trade everytime and then back test that, so you get some kind of win loss and probability. Which has value but only as a signal not a robotic trade trigger.
