The Economist and the New York Times were among some who expressed concerns for potential miscalculations on both sides. Maybe both sides should speak in respectful plain language and build some mutual trust. This game playing at the top is hurting many American farmers.

China-US trade talks are primarily about trying to reach a free trade agreement.
Since many free trade agreements discourage governments' subsidies of their industries and businesses,
and China has been giving sizable subsidies to many of its businesses and industries,
the benefits of a trade deal may not be all that clear to China.
The New York Times' opinion page provides additional political insights on why
"almost any deal could mean a very serious loss of face for Mr. Xi"
